The All Time Dream Team?
Friday, May 28, 1999

PETER SCHMEICHEL: Probably the best goalkeeper I've ever seen. He's so big you can't see the goal, never mind get the ball past him. He's leaving and there is nobody who can fill his shoes.

GARY NEVILLE: As good a right back as there is in the game - and still to reach his peak. Quick, aggressive, he gets forward yet defends well and is a competitor and a winner. He's only 24, and must rank as one of the outstanding world prospects.

JAAP STAM: It was really no gamble when Alex Ferguson spent £10 million on a centre-half, because Stam is a world- class player. Great in the air, explosive pace and reads the match well.

PAUL McGRATH: Could also read the game brilliantly. He was great on the ball and could set up moves by just stepping out of the back line. Went on to do well for Aston Villa despite having the dodgiest knees in the business.

DENIS IRWIN: Another of the current team but deserves a place every bit as much as some bigger names. Wonderful professional who never has a bad game. You never see a winger giving him the runaround.

GEORGE BEST: I've put him on the right wing but he could play on the left too. The best player Britain has ever produced, an absolute genius who could do anything he wanted with the ball. Mentioned alongside Pele, Cruyff, Di Stefano and all the greats.

ROY KEANE: A winner. Always a great player, though he got too involved in the silly stuff when he was younger. Since coming back from his injury he has calmed down a lot. World class when he stops arguing with the ref.

DUNCAN EDWARDS: An easy choice to play alongside Keane in midfield, even though he comes from a generation when the game was totally different. He was basically a taller Keane, 6ft 2in and just as aggressive. One of the truly great players of his time. Killed in the Munich air crash.

RYAN GIGGS: I first saw him when he was 17 and right away I knew he was a phenomenal talent and he isn't at his peak yet. I prefer him as an out-and-out winger - I love to see him taking on the full-back. But he doesn't score enough goals.

DENIS LAW: A finisher first and foremost, the complete goal-scorer, but he did more than that. He created a lot for the team and made space for others.

ERIC CANTONA: A superb player. Great skill but, more than that, he had a vision which few could match. Scored all kinds of goals - from tap-ins to really spectacular strikes. The temperament which brought him down also made him competitive.

Substitutes

DAVID BECKHAM: It's con -toversial to leave him on the bench. If he got on you would definitely have better crosses for the strikers - he's the best in the world at that.

BOBBY CHARLTON: It's all about opinions and many people will wonder why he's not in my team. Everyone knows his qualities.

Management

The dream team is to have ALEX FERGUSON as coach and MATT BUSBY as general manager or technical director, working together.
